FAQ

AmeriCorps is a network of national service programs that each take a different approach to improving lives and fostering civic engagement.

"Americans with all ages and backgrounds dedicating their time and skills to get things done."

More than 80,000 Americans across the country join AmeriCorps each year, and all of them are tackling different problems in different ways.

Some examples of what AmeriCorps does:

  • Help families attain affordable homes
  • Help communities recover from disasters (tornados, hurricanes, etc.)
  • Supports veterans
  • Aids in conservation efforts

And much more!

Similar to the Military or the Peace Corps, it is another form of service to our country.
But it looks different than it sounds - The correct pronunciation is (kôr) like the core of the earth or the core of an apple, but spelled with a silent “p”.

A service commitment is the allotted amount of time corps members commit to service in their respective communities. Commitments can be part-time or full-time lasting anywhere from 3 months to 1 year depending on the program. It’s most common for service commitments to be full-time between 10 – 12 months and requiring 1,700 service hours.

You can find most national opportunities on the Americorps website. However, with partnership between UCF and Volunteer Florida, you now have access to an AmeriCorps Recruiter at UCF’s campuses.

In addition to the reward of serving your country and giving back? Yes, the benefits of service include, but are not limited to:

  • Student loan deferment
  • Skills and training
  • Living allowance
  • Limited health benefit options
  • Education Award upon completion of service to help pay for college, graduate school, or vocational training, or to repay student loans
  • Career opportunities with leading employers from the private, public and nonprofit sectors

While there are few opportunities that allow for part-time participation most Americorps opportunities are full-time between 10 – 12 months and requiring 1,700 service hours. This would average to about 40-45 hours per week.

You can serve up to 4 years as an AmeriCorps Member! For every additional year completed your education award is multiplied.
